Description of Organization:

Bhumisparsha is a virtual Vajrayana Buddhist practice community founded in 2019 by Lama Rod Owens and Lama Justin von Bujdoss. Lama Rod and Lama Justin founded Bhumisparsha to disrupt systems of patriarchy, misogyny, power, and dominance that are unfortunately still present in some Vajrayana Buddhist communities.

Bhumisparsha is committed to the presentation of Vajrayana, or Tantric, Buddhism, in a way that is simultaneously both classical and has the relevance, depth and meaning that is needed in an ever-changing, multicultural world and committed to bridging the gap between spiritual practice and social change.

Grant(s) Awarded

In 2024, a Women in Buddhism grant in the amount of $2,000 was awarded to a program that will re-image Mother Kalachakri as the universal mother to heal from early childhood & colonial wounds.  This program has three aspects.

1. The philosophy of Mother Kalachakris.

2. Meditations will be led in which participants will time travel to their early wounds and reimagine those wounds in the presence of this Universal, Variegated Mother.

3. A framework will be provided in which participants can share their experience in a safe way. The goal is for the program to support a significant number of Vajrayana Buddhist practitioners in Bhumisparsha in approaching their developmental and colonial wounds. There is also the hope that this program will be a small part of a larger effort in the Vajrayana Buddhist community to move beyond portraying female deities like Kalachakri as mere consorts of male deities, and instead understand them for the full deities that they are.
