Description of Organization

FUSEE’s enduring mission is to shift the federal fire management paradigm away from its increasingly ineffective – and dangerous – crusade to prevent and suppress all wildfires and toward an Ecological Fire Management paradigm that values the lives and health of frontline workers and communities. Pulling from the best available fire ecology science and inspired by Indigenous fire stewardship, we use education, media, and advocacy to promote innovative fire management policies and practices that maximize the social and ecological benefits of controlled burning in fire-dependent ecosystems, while minimizing safety risks to firefighters and communities, and environmental damage, from over-aggressive suppression. Our strategic messaging and firefighter messengers have unrivalled credibility in public arenas to critique the endlessly escalating, ultimately unwinnable “war” on wildfire, and challenge its false narrative about “preventing” wildfire.

Grant(s) Awarded

In 2026, a grant of $2,500 was awarded to provide active wildland firefighters healing space and guidance to address the cumulative stress, trauma, and burnout they experience via meditation, yoga, qi gong, and other emotional resilience skill-building tools. Participants also share their learnings with their fellow crew members. These multi-day retreats are the core of our new Wildland Firefighter Wellness and Environmental Justice program.
