Description of Organization:

The Freedom Together’s mission is to “Provide BIPOC trainees with high-quality and transformative teacher training to become internationally certified mindfulness teachers who offer culturally appropriate programs within their field(s) of interest.” They envision “cultivating a thriving community of BIPOC mindfulness teachers who are impacting lives and advancing collective global liberation.”

Grant(s) Awarded

In 2024, a Women in Buddhism grant in the amount of $4,000 was awarded to support the Freedom Together Certified Mindfulness Teacher Training Program. In 2023, Freedom Together admitted its inaugural cohort of 20 student trainees. As part of the admissions process, Freedom Together conducted a survey of potential barriers to applying, enrolling in, and matriculating from the Program. Finances and ability to afford tuition were the most commonly identified barriers to application and enrollment. The inaugural cohort consists of 20 BIPOC students who are experienced mindfulness and contemplative practitioners in their own right. The majority of these students are female-identified, reside in the United States, and are practitioners of various Buddhist traditions. Based on data collected from individuals requesting information about the Teacher Training Program and applications, we anticipate that students in future cohorts will likely have substantial representation from BIPOC female-identified Buddhist mindfulness/contemplative practitioners who desire to develop and lead mindfulness initiatives in BIPOC communities.
