Description of Organization
Jikoji, Compassion Light Temple, is a Soto Zen Buddhist Temple with an emphasis on teaching. We also operate as a rural retreat center available for seminars, classes, as well as individuals and groups of diverse backgrounds. Jikoji offers an ongoing daily mediation practice as taught by our primary teacher Kobun Chino Otogawa Roshi. Additionally, authorized teachers in Kobun’s lineage as well as senior students are available to provide instruction in the practice of Zen meditation.
Grant(s) Awarded
In 2026, a grant of $3,800 was awarded to support, expand and publicize Voices of Women in Zen (VOWZ), a program centering women’s perspectives in Dharma practice. Through retreats featuring teachings on Buddhist matriarchs and a unique ritual co-created with scholar Paula Arai, VOWZ fosters a more complete and compassionate expression of Zen. National outreach will connect younger women in Zen with the wisdom of mature women teachers, strengthening the transmission across generations. The plan is to share the program with numerous sanghas.
