Long Beach Meditation’s mission is to provide a safe, nurturing place to learn and practice the healing art of meditation while emphasizing the profound teachings and practices that align with Buddha’s path to awakening. Long Beach Meditation is committed to transforming individuals, families, and communities by extending peace and compassion through the teachings of the Buddha and mindfulness practice.

Grant(s) Awarded

In 2024, a Women in Buddhism grant in the amount of $2,500 was awarded to provide general support for a meditation class series for women of color interested in Buddhism living in the greater Long Beach area, possibly partnering with one or two local women-based organizations. The grant would compensate women teachers and pay for rental space and supplies. The classes would be free for all. One of Long Beach Meditation’s established teachers with decades of career experience and dedication to community organizing has offered to lead a cohort of 4-6 women teachers. The goal is to reach between 50-80 women of color in the Long Beach, Los Angeles County, and greater Southern California area, specifically reaching out to Latina and BIPOC women.

In 2022, a grant in the amount of $5,000 was awarded to implement a two-part training for Long Beach Meditation’s teachers and Board members to participate in the online classes, (1) Embodying Cultural Humility: Diversity, Belonging, Equity and Inclusion Leadership in Community, and (2) Healthy Boundaries for Buddhist Leaders. The online courses will culminate with an in-person retreat at Yokoji Zen Mountain Center to discuss tangible ways in which LBM can put these lessons into action.

In 2018, a grant in the amount of $5,000 was awarded to support the recruitment of a Guiding Teacher. The retirement of their Founding Teacher, Dr. Victor Byrd, sparked a crucial turning point where an experienced, determined and charismatic leader with extensive knowledge of the Dharma was determined to be deeply helpful to lead Long Beach Meditation in its next chapter of growth.
