Description of Organization
Outreach Information Service Inc. brings social services to the homeless and urban poor, helping those living in shelters and on the streets to rebuild their lives and apply for needed assistance. Staff includes two social workers and a medical student team available to those that come to the meal program. Counseling is part of the practice. Meditation classes have helped with the daily stress homeless people face in seeking nutrition and housing.
In 2019, a grant was awarded for $2,500 to support the addition of a meditation offering for the urban poor, homeless, elderly, and other guests who face stress in their lives. Funding will help compensate social workers to screen guests, secure space for the meditation, and cover the cost of cleaning the room. Funding will also provide for the cost of security including systems of silent alarms to bring a security person to the room if needed. The program will start with sessions once a month for one year and, if helpful to our guests, expand to twice monthly.
