Description of Organization
Karuna is a community of practitioners who aspire to remain open-hearted in the face of pain and paradox. Drawing from Vajrayana Buddhism, Karuna trains people in the practices of Contemplative Psychology to integrate the world’s trauma by turning our allegiance towards innate basic sanity and the potency of community. Karuna Training aspires to provide learning communities that engender equality, belonging, and support for diverse trainees. Karuna Training is a non-secular, non-religious approach to Contemplative psychology that doesn’t require trainees to be or become a Buddhist, but values the propagation of contemplative psychology methods that can be disseminated and shared with others in multiple contexts and situations.
Grant(s) Awarded
In 2026, a grant of $4,800 was awarded to provide Equitable Access Scholarships for LGBTQIA+ persons during the 2025-2027 Basic Training. Karuna Training combines study of Buddhist contemplative psychology and direct experience of the mind through meditation and embodiment practices in a cohort community. Karuna Training’s goal is for practitioners to learn how to work skillfully with their own minds and emotions, then learn how to offer themselves to others with genuine compassion and mindful presence.
