Description of Organization
Established in 2008 as the outreach of Yoga District, a Washington, DC-based yoga studio, Yoga Activist seeks to bring yoga and mindfulness practices to undeserved communities across the country. In January 2011. Yoga Activist was incorporated as a private business in Washington, DC.
By linking community activism with mind -body healing, Yoga Activist fosters the integration of yoga into health and social service programs geared toward reaching individuals with the fewest resources through its Yoga Outreach programs. The goal is to continue to expand these services so that the organization grows into a national resource for matching volunteer yoga teachers willing to teach yoga outreach classes with partner organizations who serve populations in need.
In 2013, a grant in the amount of $5,000 was awarded to Yoga Activist to continue to expand its services and grow into a national resource for matching volunteers with yoga outreach classes and providing training and teaching resources to instructors interested in yoga outreach. Funds were used to raise Yoga Activist’s visibility as a national resource for yoga outreach through improving its online resources and trainings for yoga outreach teachers, building its mat donation program, and supporting the agencies and volunteers it serves.
