Description of Organization

The primary purpose of Zen Community of Oregon is to express and make accessible the wisdom and compassion of the Buddha’s teachings, as transmitted through an authentic, historical lineage and to support and maintain Zen Buddhist practice in order to realize our true nature and actualize the Buddha nature in everyday life. ZCO is committed to the training of future Dharma teachers, both through offering residential monastic training at Great Vow Monastery and through engagement in the broader landscape of American Buddhism. Roshi Jan Chozen Bays and Roshi Hogen Bays were the first Buddhist teachers to take the FaithTrust boundaries course and then teach on the course, and have been instrumental to bringing the topics into Buddhist sangha life.

Grant(s) Awarded

In 2026, a grant of $6,300 was awarded to support the Healthy Boundaries for Buddhist Leaders program, which provides essential ethical training on power, vulnerability, and boundaries for teachers and spiritual leaders across Buddhist traditions. Through the generous support of the Lenz Foundation, they are able to expand access for participants from all Buddhist schools and lineages in the United States, and generate new curricula for sangha education. Together, we can cultivate safer, more accountable, and compassionate Buddhist communities for generations to come.
